The index measuring tertiary industry activity climbed 1.2 percent in June, marking a fourth consecutive monthly rise, the government said Friday.
The index stood at a seasonally adjusted 108.3 against the 1995 base of 100, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a preliminary report.
A METI official, while saying tertiary industries "performed well" in June, voiced caution over July.
In this regard, he cited the potential negative impact of the unusually cold summer in eastern and northeastern Japan.
