Nissan Motor Co. said Monday it will create a new post in June, that of cochairman of the board.

Nissan President Carlos Ghosn and Executive Vice President Itaru Koeda will share the position, in addition to fulfilling their current responsibilities, the firm said.

Yoshikazu Hanawa will retire as Nissan chairman in June, while Thierry Moulonguet, chief financial officer and executive vice president, will not seek re-election when his term expires that month, the firm said.

The automaker added that it will create a new committee, the Management Committee-Dealers, in April to better effect improvements in performance among its domestic subsidiary dealers.

The committee will be chaired by Norio Matsumura, an executive vice president.

The move is aimed at accelerating implementation of the firm's three-year business plan, titled Nissan 180.

"As we successfully complete the first year of the Nissan 180, we continue to adapt our organization in order to better support our operations in our quest to deliver fully on our three-year plan," Ghosn said. Nissan said Ghosn and Koeda will also become representative directors.

If the appointments are approved at a shareholders' meeting scheduled for June 19, the number of board members will be cut to seven from the current nine.
