The House of Representatives cleared a package of bills Thursday aimed at redrawing electoral districts in an effort to correct an imbalance in the weight of votes cast in rural and urban areas.

The bills to amend the Public Offices Election Law were immediately sent to the House of Councilors and are expected to be enacted as early as Wednesday.

The legislation was approved at a Lower House plenary session, winning support from a majority of the ruling bloc, along with the Democratic Party of Japan and the Social Democratic Party.
