A group of former sex slaves who served Japan's wartime military will file a lawsuit against the Japanese government in the United States on Monday, a private nongovernmental group dealing with the issue said Friday.

Six Koreans, four Chinese, four Filipinos and one Taiwanese woman will lodge the case with a federal district court in Washington to seek compensation and an official apology from the Japanese government, the Washington Coalition for Comfort Women Issues said.

The lawsuit will mark the first time that Japan's former Asian sex slaves have turned to U.S. courts.

"The reason that they're doing it here is that this will get a lot of publicity," said Sheara Reich, the coalition's spokeswoman.
