The Transport Ministry instructed the nation's travel agents Friday to redouble efforts to inform associates overseas that a domestic law banning the purchase of sex from anyone under 18 takes effect in November.

The law, which bans sex with a person under 18 in return for money or gifts, applies to Japanese abroad as well.

In Friday's directive, issued through the Japan Association of Travel Agents, travel agents are asked to explain the law and its ramifications to their overseas staff and tour coordinators. It also asks that they not offer to arrange such services for Japanese travelers.

The ministry also asked the agencies to spread the word among their customers through pamphlets and Internet Web sites.

Under the law, those found to have purchased sex with a minor will be subject to a maximum three years in prison or fine of 1 million yen.

Parties that act as go-betweens in such encounters will also face similar punishment.

The law was enacted during the latest Diet session amid incessant criticism of Japan's laxness toward those who buy sex from minors both at home and abroad.
