Q1: What was your first encounter with Japan?

I met my Japanese wife in London and moved to Japan so I could better experience and understand her background and Japanese culture. At first we only expected to be here for a few years, but the professional challenges I have experienced through the companies I worked for convinced me and my wife to stay. At the same time, we found Tokyo to be a good place for our children.

Q2: Please state your motto in life and why you have chosen it.

“If it does not kill you, it makes you stronger.” We often experience many different challenges in our lives and if we embrace them, we will always learn very useful lessons. The challenges rarely “kill” us, so go ahead and challenge yourself.

Q3 : Over your career, what achievement are you the proudest of?

At my current company we have done a big turnaround, changing Japan from one of the biggest headaches for BoConcept to one of the best performing markets and a role model for many of the other markets. Going from cost-cutting to growing, and now into a very aggressive growth phase is a fantastic experience to have been an important part of.

Q4 : What are your goals during your time in Japan, your current position or in life?

Happiness in both my private and professional life, for myself and to make others happy. Privately, it would be to make sure my family is happy, now and in the future. Professionally, ensure I develop, achieve success and am able to pass this on to other people I work with.

Q5 : What wisdom, advice or tips can you give to people living and working in Japan?

Embrace life in Japan. Sometimes, it can be a bit scary and too different. Take it as an experience and use it to challenge yourself. Enjoy all the unique and fantastic things in Japan, whether it is its nature, food, culture, traditions or some of the many other great things. Use it to reflect on your own background and how to use the best of it all.
