DJ Kentaro "Enter"

by Manami Okazaki

DJ Kentaro is best known for his furious cut ‘n’ scratch performances that won him the coveted DMC World Championship title in 2002 with a perfect score. Kentaro’s mixing forte has always been his ability to span genres with seamless dexterity, and its this ambivalence toward sticking to one style that characterizes “Enter,” his debut album proper.

Bringing on board stateside friends such as Pharcyde and Spank Rock for guest raps, among others, there is nonetheless a mix tape feel here, albeit one that is highly polished courtesy of the album’s pristine production. Still, Kentaro realizes that people don’t want to listen to 40 minutes of the same beats, hence there are some catchy, stand-out tunes (such as guaranteed dancefloor hit “Harvest Dance”) among the expected scratching pyrotechnics. A worthwhile debut, then, even if it’s Kentaro’s live scratching ability that marks him out as a true star.
