This massive four-volume collection is devoted to the main works of one of the major film directors of the immediate post-World War II period.
Kaneto Shindo entered the film world straight from the farm in 1934 and worked his way up to the script department, earning his directorial status in 1951. During his long career (he is at present making his next film, at the age of 90), Shindo continued to both create scripts and to direct them. Usually scripting for himself, he wrote for others as well.
He collaborated early on with director Kozaburo Yoshimura, for whom he wrote "A Ball at the Anjo House" (1947) and "The Tale of Genji" (1951), and, with Tadashi Imai, the kabuki adaptation "Night Drum" (1958). He worked with director Kenji Mizoguchi as well, writing the scripts for "The Victory of Women" (1946) and "My Love Burns" (1949).
