Cheers fill the salt-kissed air at the beach by the Sea of Japan as a set of couples complete a round of zouk, a Brazilian partner dance that evolved from the lambada. Many rehearsals have led to this moment. Each dip, step and, yes, even the fumbles, are well-earned.
A camera is on hand to follow the barefoot dancers as they dance in the sand, colorful scarves accentuating the elegant movements of their hands as they follow the rhythmic Latin music.
After a few rounds and partner changes, filming is complete. An even louder cheer erupts from the group and some onlookers. A palpable sense of relief and pride emanate from the dancers. It was a good session, and now it’s time to party.
