Standing still in time and place
For my money, there are two "not-to-miss" sights in the overall Kanto area.

Rocket Johnny: to infinity and beyond!
In the heart of downtown Shinjuku there's a land -- far over the rainbow -- where dreams really do come true. That is, if your dream involves a bowel movement.

2005: A sneeze odyssey

Oh give me a home where the roaches won't roam
For years I took my dog on walks into Saitama Prefecture so she could go pee, among other things. Now I have found similar use for Saitama myself.

As cute as cute can be
A friend who visited these fair islands for the first time last fall had this to say of his weekend-to-weekend impressions of Japan.

Take this job and love it
Maybe it was Benjamin Disraeli or maybe it was Mark Twain or maybe it was me who said, "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics . . . followed by Japanese financial data."

Freezin' in a winter wonderland
Winter lies heavy on Japan. In this country, that means ski slopes, hot sake, common-pot stews, frosty smiles, rosy cheeks and -- at least for those in the highlands or up north -- buckets of snow. It's but one cozy chapter of the chipper romance that all Japanese feel for the four seasons.

These are a few of my favorite things
One duty of all foreign residents of Japan is to pick up a bunch of Japanese "things." You know, the knickknack, bric-a-brac, give-the-junk-a-home type of stuff that is probably cluttering up your dwelling even now.

A little knowledge can be a silly thing
One hitch about living long years in Japan is that sooner or later people expect you to know something about it. Not folks from home, mind you, for they mostly practice that ignorance is bliss. A la:

Winning and losing the compliment game
My, I'm impressed with the way you read. Your eyes just sail across the text like a clipper ship backed by fair winds and bound for a friendly port. Even when you blink, you don't slow down. Even when I type challenging words like "panegyric" or "ibetyourbreathcouldkillahorse," you barely pause on the...

When stumped, real English teachers 'goflibberate'
The other day I had coffee with a foreign friend who bore the fizzled hair and drooping face of long years of English teaching in Japan. It looked like the blood had been sucked from his skin and bicycle-pumped into his eyeballs.

Some don't like it hot
My idea of hell is to be trapped for eternity in a tiny room with two women with one-track minds. All they want to do is talk, and their sole topic is this:

Longform

Wozme, founded by dancer and choreographer Wakaba Kohei, is composed of Kana Kitty, Ami Ishii, Akane Watanabe and Natsuki. Its aim is to inject elegance and beauty, traits traditionally associated with femininity, into the sometimes grotesque art form of butoh dance.
