With the Oct. 4 election fast approaching, Liberal Democratic Party presidential candidates used their first joint news conference Tuesday to share their vision for reforming the party.

Whoever wins must move quickly to shore up deep internal party divisions and find opposition party support, perhaps in the form of a third coalition partner, to have an LDP-led majority coalition in both chambers of parliament. The fall session of parliament is set to begin soon after the LDP race.

The race began Monday with five candidates vying to become the next party president and then win the parliamentary vote for prime minister.
