The head of the World Health Organization told Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday that he wants to make preparations with Japan for the "success" of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Speaking by phone, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed his support for Japan's agreement last week with the International Olympic Committee to postpone the 2020 Summer Games for about a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, after Abe briefed him on the delay, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Abe was quoted as telling Tedros that Japan is determined to hold the Olympics in a "complete" way and show that humankind has won the battle against the new virus. A complete games is taken to mean there should be no scaling down and no restrictions on spectators.
