An internal probe by Nissan Motor Co. has discovered misconduct at its plants over the employment of foreign trainees, including forcing them to perform jobs not sanctioned under a government program, a company official said Wednesday.
The internal probe found that 45 interns from Indonesia and the Philippines were assigned to do tasks such as painting when they should have been learning how to mold bumpers at plants in Kanagawa Prefecture, the official said.
Some 150 other trainees at its plants in Tochigi and Fukushima prefectures were also found to have engaged in unsanctioned work, the official said.
Nissan has rectified the situation, the official said.
A law intended to improve supervision over companies that accept foreign workers under the trainee program came into force last year.
Similar cases of misconduct have also been found at Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s plant in Aichi Prefecture involving Filipino trainees.
