Japan's men made it five wins out of five and topped its group at the World Team Table Tennis Championships on Wednesday as they geared up for the second round.

Japan, which had already secured its place in the knockout phase, beat Portugal 3-1 in its final Group C fixture and maintained its perfect record following wins over Belarus, Singapore, Poland and Ukraine.

Japan will be seeded for the round of 16 and face the winner of the Australia-Hong Kong quarterfinal match.

In the women's competition, Germany topped Japan 3-2. It was Japan's first loss of the tournament. Japan edged Germany and North Korea for the Group B top spot on head-to-head records.
