Kohei Uchimura will miss the upcoming Asian gymnastics championships in Hiroshima because of a shoulder injury, the five-time world all-around champion said on Tuesday.

Uchimura has been suffering from pain in his left shoulder and with the world championships approaching in October, he decided to skip the Asian championships, which begin on July 31, to focus on making a complete recovery.

"It means nothing if you can't compete in the big events," Uchimura said. "I'm not going to rush back. I'm going to take my time and see how I feel along the way."

Uchimura also sat out the All-Japan individual event championships in June with the same injury.
