Noriaki Kasai tasted defeat after he failed to advance to the second round of jumps in the men's normal hill event at the world ski championships in Falun, Sweden, on Saturday.
The 42-year-old Kasai, who won the silver medal in the men's large hill at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, finished in 35th place after a first-round effort of just 86.5 meters on the K-90 hill.
"I messed up (my take off). My skis descended. That was a terrible mistake," said Kasai. "I wasn't feeling calm. I want to make a fresh start and do my best in the next competition."
Compatriot Taku Takeuchi sailed 93 meters on both attempts to finish in fifth with 241.6.
Twenty-five-year-old Rune Velta of Norway, who is winless on the World Cup circuit, had two leaps of 95.5 meters to claim his first championship with 252.7.
