Yukifumi Murakami failed to reach the final in the men's javelin throw at the IAAF World Athletics Championships on Thursday.

The 33-year-old Murakami, who won a bronze medal at the 2009 worlds in Berlin, came up short after an effort of 77.75 meters in the preliminary round.

Compatriot Chisato Fukushima was clocked at 23.85 seconds in the women's 200 meters, leaving her in sixth out of the seven runners in her heat. She failed to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive time at a worlds.

Allyson Felix, who is gunning for a ninth gold medal for the most ever by an athlete at a world championships, topped the heats with a time of 22.59.
