Sony Corp. said Monday its landmark building in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district will be torn down after it closes in March 2017.

The land the Sony Building stands on, a 707 sq.-meter plot at the Sukiyabashi intersection, will be cleared to make way for a park from 2018 through the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Sony hopes charity, music and sports events will take place in the park.

It said it will begin constructing a new building sometime after the fall of 2020, with a view to completing it within two years.

The Sony Building opened in 1966 at the direction of Sony co-founder Akio Morita. It currently attracts around 4 million visitors each year.

The building has eight floors above ground and five below. The first to sixth floors are mainly occupied by Sony Store Ginza and showrooms for Sony products.

Sony Store Ginza will be relocated temporarily to Ginza Place, a shopping complex slated to open on Sept. 24 at the busy Ginza 4-chome intersection.
