Government adopts reconstruction policy on fifth anniversary of 2011 disaster

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet adopted a basic five-year post-disaster reconstruction policy on Friday, the fifth anniversary of the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami that devastated coastal areas of northeastern Japan.

Under the new policy, the government plans to finish by March 2017 radiation cleanup work in all designated areas around Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s disaster-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture so it can lift evacuation advisories and residency restrictions.

For industrial revival, it will promote tourism and the processing sectors of marine products.

The measures also envisages commerce revitalization through financial and sales assistance for local shop owners.

The basic reconstruction policy is scheduled for another review in three years.
