A 38-year old crew member of a fishing boat is missing after his vessel collided with a tanker off Wakayama Prefecture, the Japan Coast Guard said Sunday.

The crew of the 498-ton tanker Shoyo Maru informed the coast guard that it collided with the 13.47-ton Konpira Maru fishing boat about 3.7 kilometers off the town of Mihama, Wakayama Prefecture.

The fishing boat capsized and one of its two crew members went missing after they were thrown out of the boat, according to the coast guard.

Meiwa Kaiun Co., the operator of the tanker, said the accident took place while the tanker was carrying 300 tons of liquid petrochemicals to Kawasaki.
