Around 300 passengers spent more than five hours stuck on a train in Yamagata Prefecture on Wednesday when power failed. There were no injuries, the train operator said.

The incident took place at around 7:40 a.m. on the Senzan Line when a tree laden with snow fell and hit an overhead wire, East Japan Railway Co. said.

The power failure meant the train's heating system did not work, so JR East staff distributed disposable heating pads to passengers. They also handed out food.

The local meteorological observatory said 4 cm of snow fell in the city of Yamagata early Wednesday morning.
