Isuzu to test euglena-based biofuel

Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Euglena Co. said Wednesday that they will launch in July a bus that uses biofuel made from euglena, a single-celled organism that sometimes forms green scum on stagnant water.

The automaker and the biotechnology startup will use a blend of 1 percent biodiesel made from euglena and 99 percent gas oil for the bus to connect an Isuzu plant in Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture, and Shonandai Station in the city.

Using euglena, the they will conduct joint research aimed at establishing technology to produce next-generation biodiesel.
