Japanese TV show ‘Waratte Iitomo!’ to end in March after three decades

The popular lunchtime television show “Waratte Iitomo!” will end in March, more than three decades after its launch, host Tamori revealed during Tuesday’s show.

Launched on Oct. 4, 1982, the live program appears on Fuji TV from noon to 1 p.m. weekdays. The title literally means “It’s OK to Laugh!”

Tamori, whose real name is Kazuyoshi Morita, has hosted the TV show since its the launch.

Following the 5,000th broadcast on April 5, 2002, the program was certified by Guinness World Records as boasting “the highest number of live variety TV shows hosted by the same presenter.” Tuesday’s show was its 7,947th.

A Fuji TV public relations official said it was canceling the program due to scheduling reasons.

“I’m grateful to our guests and to TV watchers” who supported the program,” Tamori said.
