Plan would cancel nursery waiting list

A reform panel advising the Cabinet Office drafted a proposal Thursday suggesting that a new goal be set to reduce the nationwide waiting list for nursery schools to zero by the end of fiscal 2014.

The government’s current target is within five years from fiscal 2015, which the panel said is too slow.

To reach the fiscal 2014 deadline, deregulation will be required to make it easier for private companies and nonprofit organizations to run nursery schools, the panel said.

The panel recommends unifying the national guidelines for approving nursery schools and engaging in special time-limited deregulation in big cities, where waiting lists are much longer, that will result in boosting the ranks of caretakers overall and at specific nurseries.
