Eritrea coup ends without bloodshed

An Eritrean mutiny, one of the strongest challenges ever made to the authoritarian regime in the Red Sea state, appears to be over with the capital calm, diplomats said Tuesday.

Around 100 armed mutineers, who stormed the Information Ministry on Monday before demanding state-run media broadcast demands for political reform in the one-party state, had left the hilltop complex.

Awate.com, an opposition website that is based in the U.S. but has connections in Eritrea, said the commander of the rebels had agreed to leave the ministry, something believed to have happened late Monday.
