Canon to make cameras in Brazil

Canon Inc. has established a subsidiary in the Brazilian city of Manaus for production of compact digital cameras.

The unit, Canon Industria de Manaus, will be the camera maker’s first production base in South America, Canon said Monday.

It is slated to start operations in July 2013. The subsidiary will have a workforce of about 60 at the end of next year, Canon said.

Digital camera demand in Brazil is expected to expand toward the 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer finals in the country and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Canon decided on the local production facility because Brazil is the fourth-largest digital camera market in the world after the United States, China and Japan. The firm currently exports digital cameras to Brazil primarily from China and Malaysia.
