Draft program targets buckets of Olympic gold medals

An education ministry panel has approved a basic program outlining the promotion of sports and other physical activities that includes numerical targets for Japanese gold medals at the Olympics.

Approved Monday, the draft sets gold medal ranking targets of fifth or higher for the Summer Olympics and 10th place or higher for the Winter Games, and touches on the importance of creating an environment to train both athletes and coaches to achieve the medals targets.

It calls for improving children’s physical strength as well as ensuring transparency in the operations of sports groups. The program was compiled based on a basic sports law that took effect last year.

The Central Council for Education will submit its report on the basic program to Hirofumi Hirano, minister of education, culture, sports, science and technology, in late March.

The ministry will decide later on the basic program as a guideline for sports-related administration over the next five years starting in April.
