Wakayama panda off on China breeding mission

A giant panda cub born at a zoo in Wakayama Prefecture was sent to China from Kansai International Airport on Monday, zoo officials said.

Yu-hin, a 30-month-old male, was born to Mei Mei and her mate, Yong Ming, on Dec. 17, 2001, at Adventure World in the popular hot-spring town of Shirahama. He is being given to China for breeding purposes, the officials said. Mei Mei and Yong Ming are both on loan from China.

Yu-hin was the fourth panda to be kept at the zoo and the second to be born there. China had asked for Yu-hin because he is considered to have high breeding potential, the official said.

Yu-hin will be kept at a giant panda breeding and nurturing research institute in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, where facility officials will wait for him to grow.
