The International Judo Federation on Friday announced new regulations that will apply for the next Olympic cycle at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Among the new rules are the scrapping of the yuko evaluation of technique points, leaving only ippon and waza-ari, and the duration of contests.

The IJF said the goal is "to promote the rules of judo and make them easier to understand, as well as to simplify them." It said the purpose of these rules is "to give priority to the attack and to the realization of ippon."

A test period at the international level will start at the beginning of January 2017.
