Reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu will be off the ice for two months due to ligament damage in his left foot, the Japan Skating Federation said Tuesday.

The Toronto-based Hanyu, who finished second in last month's world championships, will not return to Japan, remaining in Canada for treatment. His corporate sponsor, ANA, plans to report on his progress in mid-May.

Since the start of this past season, Hanyu was dealing with pain in his left foot, which grew worse from January.

Because of the stress that toe loops place on the left foot, Hanyu was compelled to switch from a quad toe loop to a quad Salchow at the worlds, which he was looking to win for the first time in two seasons.
