Former Japan defender Daisuke Suzuki has joined Spain's Gimnastic de Tarragona, the second-division club announced on its website on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old center back, who helped Japan reach the semifinals of the 2012 London Olympics, has signed a deal through the end of the season with an option for a further two years.

Suzuki had been keen for a move abroad and said in November that he had received an offer from Spanish top-tier side Rayo Vallecano. He left Kashiwa Reysol at the end of last season.

Capped twice at senior international level, Suzuki joined J. League first-division side Albirex Niigata in 2008 and spent five seasons there before making a move to Reysol in 2013.

Tarragona are in fourth place in the second tier with 41 points from 25 games, six behind leaders Alaves.
