Former sekiwake and No. 7 maegashira Aran retired Tuesday after going 3-12 at last month's Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.

The 29-year-old Russian, who was a world champion as an amateur wrestler, made his professional debut at the 2007 New Year' Basho, climbing to sekiwake in the fall of 2010.

Aran had just switched to the Kasugano stable last week, after his old stablemaster Mihogaseki closed shop due to mandatory retirement.
