TEAM PROFILES

World Cup Record: Previous appearances: 11 Winners 1966 Semifinalists 1990

Road to Germany: opped qualifying group with 8 wins in 10 games, despite an embarrassing loss to N. Ireland on the way

Manager: Sven-Goran Eriksson (Sweden)

Prospects: If the hype is to be believed, England have a better chance at this World Cup than at any other since 1966 of winning the trophy again.

A recent injury to Wayne Rooney that looks likely to rule him out of most of the tournament will be a huge blow, but with players like Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole both in fine form, a solid John Terry at the back, the experience of Gary Neville and the enduring dead-ball skills of David Beckham, England are on paper a better team than at the last World Cup.

The inclusion of untested teenage striker Theo Walcott, who has yet to play a Premiership game, has surprised many pundits and is a gamble that could reap benefits or fail miserably. England are World Cup quarterfinal specialists and have a habit of imploding at that point, but they should get through this group without difficulty.

Old enemies Germany and Argentina stand in their path on the route to the final, if not a resurgent Netherlands. There will be no shortage of fanatical English support, and if Michael Owen can recover his form after a long layoff from injury, England just might have what it takes to go all the way.
