Yuki Takahashi missed out on Japan's first medal at the World Wrestling Championships, losing to Iran's Hassan Rahimi in the men's 57 kg third-place match on Monday.

The 20-year-old Takahashi lost to North Korea's Yang Kyong Il in the quarterfinals and moved to the repechage, where he beat Kim Sung-gwon of South Korea before facing Rahimi, the defending champion in the 55 kg.

Also on the opening day of the championships, Atsushi Matsumoto fell at the first hurdle to Cuban Reineris Salas in the 86 kg and failed to advance from the repechage.

Ken Hosaka also lost in the repechage in the 70 kg, and Tomoyuki Oka was eliminated in the first round of the 125 kg.
