We read the Sept. 6 editorial "Up from the 'baby post'" with great dismay. Please understand that these babies and their mothers suffer a profound loss from which they will never recover.

Before establishing these "safe havens" for babies, Japan should look at the real, lived experience of those who have survived such devastating experiences. It would be far better to address the social problem directly and provide support to young mothers who find themselves in unplanned pregnancies. Do remember that adoption is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Healthy societies keep families together. The whole world knows that Japan is a society that deeply values family and ancestry.

The opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are the writer's own and do not necessarily reflect the policies of The Japan Times.
