Mitsubishi Pharma warning ordered

The health ministry on Monday told Mitsubishi Pharma Corp. to issue an urgent warning following a report by the Osaka-based pharmaceutical firm that 12 patients who were given its antistroke drug died of acute renal failure.

A company spokesperson said a link between 10 deaths out of the 12 cases and the use of the drug edaravone cannot be ruled out. The causes of death in the other two cases are unknown.

The drugmaker started selling the agent in June 2001.
