Optical products maker Hoya Corp. said Monday that it posted a record group net profit of 14.8 billion yen during the half-year period ending Sept. 30.
The profit, 8.7 percent higher than the same period the previous year, came on group sales of 123 billion yen and operating income of 26.5 billion yen, also new records, company officials said.
The maker of optical devices and consumer products such as glasses and contact lenses attributed the good performance to brisk sales of so-called mask blanks, which are used to manufacture semiconductors. Strong sales of digital camera lenses also helped.
Total sales at the firm’s electro-optics segment rose 5.1 percent to 54.6 billion yen compared with the same period last year.
But sales from the photonics segment, which includes products such as fiber-optic communication devices and laser equipment for medical use, fell 13.8 percent in the period.
