Man arrested for stealing own car

OSAKA — A 65-year-old man has been arrested and indicted on suspicion of stealing his own car after it was towed for being illegally parked, local police said Sunday.

The suspect, identified as Fukuji Igawa of the city of Higashi-Osaka, allegedly stole his car from a private parking lot in Higashinari Ward, Osaka, Thursday afternoon. The vehicle had been moved there earlier in the day by police after it was towed for illegal parking. The car legally became the property of the Higashinari Police Station from the tow-away point.

Igawa arrived at the station the following day to take care of the paperwork to get his car back, but the parking lot attendant who was then sent to fetch the vehicle saw that it was missing, police said. Igawa had not paid the roughly 14,000 yen in towing expenses, saying he would pay it at a later date.

Police officers on the lookout saw Igawa driving the car in question near JR Osaka Station later that day, and he was arrested Saturday on suspicion of theft.

The suspect was quoted by police as saying that he knew which parking lot the police station used to keep cars it had towed because his car had been towed in the past.
