A man claiming to be a French national has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a cash card from another man and withdrawing about 1.8 million yen from automated teller machines, police said Saturday.
Boughreaba Redouane, 24, is suspected of stealing a cash card from a 56-year-old unemployed man at an ATM of a Mizuho Bank outlet in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward on Sept. 19 and later withdrawing a total of 1,775,000 yen on two occasions, the police said.
According to the police, Redouane memorized the man’s bank card number by looking over his shoulder while the man was withdrawing cash from an ATM.
Redouane then spoke to the man in French, apparently to distract him while an accomplice, who also appeared to be foreign, took the cash card from the ATM, the police said.
Redouane has denied the allegations, they said.
