The number of Hong Kong people who feel pride in being Chinese fell to a record low, according to a University of Hong Kong poll released Thursday, the eve of the 19th anniversary of the former British colony's handover to China.

The university's public opinion program, which gauges public views on sociopolitical matters, found that 31 percent of some 1,000 people surveyed said they feel a sense of pride in becoming Chinese citizens after the 1997 handover, dropping 7 percentage points from a year ago.

The proportion of those who said they do not share the pride rose 9 points to 65 percent.
