The number of people registered as members of the Liberal Democratic Party grew for the third straight year in 2015 but fell short of its target, the party said.
The number rose 10 percent from the previous year to 987,182, the LDP said Tuesday. The party’s goal was 1.2 million.
Speaking at a news conference, LDP Secretary-General Sadakazu Tanigaki called on party lawmakers to ramp up their recruiting efforts.
By prefecture, Tokyo had the most LDP members, with 88,438, followed by Kanagawa with 55,445 and Ibaraki with 42,394.
Nara had the least number of LDP members at 6,119, followed by Iwate at 6,202 and Saga at 7,277.
