A 54-year-old man was arrested on Monday after wounding two police officers apparently with a Japanese sword and holing up in his house for 5½ hours.

The attack took place after police responded to an emergency call from a residence about a man acting violently in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, at around 8:40 p.m. on Sunday. When the officers, in their 30s, arrived, the man slashed one in the face and the other in the finger before shutting himself up in the house.

Kanagawa Prefectural Police broke into the house at around 2 a.m. Monday and arrested the man. The house is in a residential area about 400 meters away from Minamirinkan Station on the Odakyu Enoshima Line.

The man was living with his 81-year-old mother, who fled with a bruise before her son attacked the police. She was later taken to a hospital.

None of the injuries inflicted were fatal.
