JR Tokai has fastest maglev in the world: Guinness World Records

Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) said Friday that its magnetically levitated shinkansen was recognized by Guinness World Records as the fastest maglev in the world as of Thursday after achieving a speed of 603 kph in April.

During a test run in Yamanashi Prefecture on April 21, the train sustained a speed of over 600 kph for about 10 seconds in a tunnel from Fuefuki to Uenohara stations in the mountainous prefecture.

The previous record was 581 kph, set in December 2003 by the same train.

JR Tokai plans to launch maglev shinkansen services in 2027, but those trains will be kept to a maximum speed of about 500 kph.
