A brand-name pair of mangoes from Miyazaki Prefecture was auctioned off for ¥300,000 ($2,495) on Monday at a wholesale market in the prefectural capital, matching last year's record high.

Taiyo no Tamago (Egg of the Sun) mangoes are selected under strict criteria including weight, which must exceed 350 grams, and sugar content. This year's crop is expected to be about 1,010 tons, with shipments peaking between May and June, according to the Miyazaki Agricultural Economic Federation.

Among the 157 cases of two mangoes each auctioned on Monday, the highest-priced pair were to be sold at a department store in Fukuoka, the largest city in Kyushu.
