Artists from Beppu, Oita Prefecture, which is famous for bamboo products, are exhibiting works made of bamboo for sale at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Los Angeles.

The purpose of the event is to promote Beppu's traditional bamboo crafts as artworks overseas. The event will continue until Oct. 19, during which artists will demonstrate bamboo weaving.

They are exhibiting 10 artworks of woven bamboo made in Oita Prefecture that all measure smaller than 40 sq. cm.

They can be displayed on dining tables, used as fruit dishes or flower vases, and are normally priced at ¥100,000 to ¥200,000.

The unique works include a roughly woven bowl titled "Water Mirror" that represents the surface of a lake reflecting sunshine. Another expresses open flower buds.

"I hope the bamboo works draw attention outside of Japan and provide more opportunities for young artists," said Ichiro Iwao, 59, head of the Oita Bamboo Industry and Culture Association.
