WASHINGTON – Black students at Harvard University are harnessing social media to challenge racial stereotypes. The Tumblr blog I, Too, Am Harvard, had been viewed more than 235,000 times as of Thursday.
Just over 1,100 of Harvard’s 21,000 students are African-American, 63 of them on the blog reveal some of the more frustrating and condescending remarks they’ve encountered there.
“You don’t sound black — you sound smart,” recounted one student, who like her peers inscribed the comment on a handheld blackboard. “You’re the whitest black person I know,” another recalled being told, while a third informed white students: “The lack of diversity in this classroom does not make me the voice of all black people.”
