40% of farm items not imported

A government survey released Wednesday shows Japan in fiscal 2010 did not import 234 of 586 items in five sensitive farm product categories related to the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks.

Japan wants the five categories — rice, wheat and barley, beef and pork, dairy products, and sugar and starch — to be excluded from the TPP’s basic principle of tariff elimination.

The 586 items break down into 58 in the rice category, 131 in sugar and starch, 109 in wheat and barley, 188 in dairy products, and 100 in beef and pork.

The government may find room for possibility making concessions for the 234 items in the TPP talks, sources said.
