Tokyo Skytree topped the list of the hottest items in Japan in 2013, superseding smartphones, which headed the list for three years in a row, leading ad agency Dentsu Inc. said in a survey report Tuesday.
Overtaken also by hybrid autos, smartphones fell to third place.
Tokyo Skytree, the world’s tallest free-standing broadcast tower, opened in May 2012.
It “has attracted attention as a major tourist destination in Tokyo at a time when there is a leisure boom thanks to the effects of ‘Abenomics,’ or Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s economic policies,” said the Dentsu Innovation Institute, which conducted the survey.
Two products — robotic vacuum cleaners and collision avoidance systems for vehicles — that promise further innovations ranked fourth and fifth.
The list was based on an Internet survey covering 1,000 people across the country aged between 20 and 69. It was conducted in mid-November.
