The government on Tuesday adopted a strategy aimed at beefing up security in the country toward the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020.
The strategy features steps against cyberattacks and terrorist attacks on such facilities as nuclear power stations.
While stressing the importance of utilizing private-sector know-how, the strategy calls for a study on setting up a new body to share and analyze cybercrime information held by the public and private sectors, and the academic world. The new body will be modeled after a U.S. nonprofit organization with a similar role.
The number of cybercrimes detected by police in 2012 came to 7,334, nearly four-fold from 1,849 in 2003.
