JR East team to advise JR Hokkaido

Transport minister Akihiro Ota said Tuesday that East Japan Railway Co. will send senior officials, including its head of safety control, to Hokkaido Railway Co. whose track irregularities have been ignored for a long time.

The move is designed to explain JR East’s safety technologies to JR Hokkaido, Ota said at a press conference, adding that he hopes the JR East team will help JR Hokkaido improve its safety record.

The officials will remain at JR Hokkaido, where they will teach track maintenance technology and improve guidelines.

In July, Ota told JR Hokkaido to consider accepting technical assistance from JR East in the wake of a series of problems.
